I was going to purchase a few things, but was highly distracted by the HO Scale layout on display. I can see HO. N....it's so small! Ended up leaving with only a book. A few hours later, I recovered from my HO illness and resumed work on the benchwork.<br />
<br />
Finished the intermediate supports on the 2x8 section of benchwork. Cut the 1x4s for the next 2x4 section of benchwork and assembled that section.<br />
<br />
I have one more 2x8 section of benchwork to complete. That one will be more involved as I will cut out the river bed in the benchwork.<br />
<br />
This evening, I drove up to Hobby Lobby to pick up some paint. The hobby shop had paint, but it was so old, I would flip it over to find it dried up like the Sahara.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I talked to Rod Warren who created this scene. He sent me measurements. All of his was scratchbuilt. I'm not that talented so I will try to do the best I can with kitbashing.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This evening, I worked on two other structures that come with the Prairie Elevator Kit. I need to find my paint brushes so I can paint. I will then add the doors, windows and other details.</div>

I will install those tomorrow as it got to be too late for drilling as people were sleeping in the house.<br />
<br />
Later in the evening, I broke out the Walthers Prairie Coop Elevator kit. I have been excited about this kit since it first came out. It looks like many of the concrete elevators I have seen in Illinois. This fits the bill perfectly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3_9-I350pYY/WmKzwtwoD3I/AAAAAAAAN30/MNqdsFhrtH0o4LBCdQf0cSZY67s3OcPTwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1696.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3_9-I350pYY/WmKzwtwoD3I/AAAAAAAAN30/MNqdsFhrtH0o4LBCdQf0cSZY67s3OcPTwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_1696.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I get the kit out and notice the size of the silos. Wow! This is tiny! Surely, that must be half the silo and there are more pieces in the kit. No. Sadness.<br />
<br />
Kit states it is 7 3/16" tall. That may be with the additional dryer vents on top. I measured from bottom of silo to top of head house at 6 13/16" (roughly 6 3/4"). I go grab a N Scale covered hopper for comparison. Damn! This is way too short!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AWSkXU9ioRk/WmKzwvasYvI/AAAAAAAAN3w/rJ_15HlFr_U6FVNYoKt0HTDItCzpBn9gACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1697.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AWSkXU9ioRk/WmKzwvasYvI/AAAAAAAAN3w/rJ_15HlFr_U6FVNYoKt0HTDItCzpBn9gACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1697.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JTgkh_48Kz0/WmKzwbo04TI/AAAAAAAAN3s/lcZSMC5yLQsdEwRREGPSPnz-AO1PuMGywCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1698.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JTgkh_48Kz0/WmKzwbo04TI/AAAAAAAAN3s/lcZSMC5yLQsdEwRREGPSPnz-AO1PuMGywCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1698.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SY3vs7sO6Pw/WmKzxc0PHfI/AAAAAAAAN34/B_9BwWYHdsggtAH3tTYb0sGzWcdhtEyrwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1699.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SY3vs7sO6Pw/WmKzxc0PHfI/AAAAAAAAN34/B_9BwWYHdsggtAH3tTYb0sGzWcdhtEyrwCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1699.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I add the head house on top of the silo, but this still seems short. I bust out the old calculator to determine this is 90 feet in N Scale.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BxnMvHp7bkw/WmKzxhImpMI/AAAAAAAAN38/YVVmcyvRD3cvhKv7P-h8ORbmp8zfM6-HQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1700.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BxnMvHp7bkw/WmKzxhImpMI/AAAAAAAAN38/YVVmcyvRD3cvhKv7P-h8ORbmp8zfM6-HQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1700.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought about purchasing another kit and doubling the height. Silos and head house measure out to be 11 1/2". This comes to 153' in N Scale. That seems too large. Performing a Google search, I find that these type grain elevators range in height from 100-130 ft typically. 90 feet seems to short. I would rather have mine around 130 feet which is roughly 3" taller. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will have to ponder this. Again, my goal is to recreate this. I guess I need to break out the Walthers ADM silos and Walthers Famers Coop. I have a feeling I will still need to add some height to this kit, but how much is the question.</div>

Last weekend at the WGHS, I picked up a Walthers McGraw Oil Kit in HO Scale. Did I turn to the dark side? No. I wanted to use the tanks from the kit for my bulk oil facility. My father-in-law manages a small bulk oil facility in Illinois. So, I wanted to create one on the layout.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.walthers.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/845x425/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/0/9/09330000002913_big.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="402" data-original-width="800" height="160" src="https://www.walthers.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/845x425/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/0/9/09330000002913_big.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is what the kit looks like normally.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o8w1nj2fXJc/WmEF9XlGhCI/AAAAAAAAN2w/FrvRnGssYxcSKuYWitZ7rM5nsWO4MjulgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1685.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o8w1nj2fXJc/WmEF9XlGhCI/AAAAAAAAN2w/FrvRnGssYxcSKuYWitZ7rM5nsWO4MjulgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1685.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tanks are supposed to be four sections tall. I only used three of the sections. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9cWPBnjDnQQ/WmEF9W-kbII/AAAAAAAAN2s/sPGemW86lbU77E9I7qRuZoKKb_rLyvmcgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1686.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9cWPBnjDnQQ/WmEF9W-kbII/AAAAAAAAN2s/sPGemW86lbU77E9I7qRuZoKKb_rLyvmcgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1686.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also trimmed down the standpipe assembly to be more in line with N scale.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M1QYE4X6x-Y/WmEF9FaRqsI/AAAAAAAAN2o/MSaQfCbt1AAqZmgKKtiRT-stCCJFQQPUACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1687.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M1QYE4X6x-Y/WmEF9FaRqsI/AAAAAAAAN2o/MSaQfCbt1AAqZmgKKtiRT-stCCJFQQPUACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1687.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These have a rubber hose (included with kit) that will attach. All of these pieces will be painted.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y4AuKdZJ7RU/WmEF9154EsI/AAAAAAAAN24/biObV72zsk8oMKnsHK93FCcsHSe62tcggCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1689.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y4AuKdZJ7RU/WmEF9154EsI/AAAAAAAAN24/biObV72zsk8oMKnsHK93FCcsHSe62tcggCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1689.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I couldn't use the buildings as the door/windows would be out of scale for N scale. The roof assembly and platform for the decking did remind me of a covered loading area for trucks. I think I will use the roof and foundation along with some scratchbuilt pieces to do just that.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nAyEV7XZ870/WmEF90eM8ZI/AAAAAAAAN28/gCvv65ddGWYLKs3eGVXtaiTZrvXm1uJ7gCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1690.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nAyEV7XZ870/WmEF90eM8ZI/AAAAAAAAN28/gCvv65ddGWYLKs3eGVXtaiTZrvXm1uJ7gCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1690.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the unused sections of tank. I plan on adding the Walthers Interstate Oil Kit (N Scale) and possibly the Walthers LP Tank Kit (N Scale) depending on how much room I have. Overall, I think it will be a decent bulk oil facility.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm happy to report one 2'x8' section of benchwork is nearly complete. I need to resize the intermediate supports underneath as I was a little long on my original cut. </div>

Reports started off with a trace of snow. Last report received this morning 3-6" of the whiteness.<br />

While on vacation in Illinois, I stopped by Chuck's Depot in Marion, Illinois on our way home. I found he had a N Scale Tug Boat and Coal Barge. I'm not to keen on barge, but the tug boat would definitely work. I want to create a river barge dock for the Peabody Coal Company on the layout. The kit is by BlueJacket. Here are some photos:</div>

I also attended the World's Greatest Hobby Show. I haven't been to a show in probably ten years. This was the biggest by far. The Sipping & Switching Society of NC had an incredibly large modular layout We saw quite a few long trains travers that railroad. The radius on on some of the curves had be 12 feet or more. It was crazy! I watched them back up a 125 car sand train into the yard. No derailments! </div>

I looked at the plan and see three feasible solutions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kf4t8D2fFRs/Wle8e8dFRhI/AAAAAAAANys/Q7dfIAfNPZQrMF8TSY5eEdkpmUVzrahpQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1607.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kf4t8D2fFRs/Wle8e8dFRhI/AAAAAAAANys/Q7dfIAfNPZQrMF8TSY5eEdkpmUVzrahpQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_1607.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>Extend the ICG mainline out to the left (on the bottom drawing). This would cross the return loop at a 90 degree angle.</li>
<li>Extend out the unknown railroad (on the top drawing).</li>
<li>(most preferred) Extend the ICG mainline (on the bottom drawing) and add a left turnout for return loop. I could then add a drop leaf staging yard to the right like I did on my old Rock Island layout.</li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ne3yUfRNQiM/VfLh9EGfwII/AAAAAAAAL8M/2-1D7dwLopo/s1600/2015-09-10%2B22.05.18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ne3yUfRNQiM/VfLh9EGfwII/AAAAAAAAL8M/2-1D7dwLopo/s320/2015-09-10%2B22.05.18.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, I inquired about construction two 8ft x 2ft sections vs four 4ft x 2ft sections. Feedback was definitely go with 8ft x 2ft sections. That will help speed up construction.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, regarding the large grain elevator. When researching a few months back, I came across this elevator on Rod Warren's layout. I would like to recreate it as close as possible. I believe I have all the kit components required to construct it now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.freerails.com/gallery/4474/4474_271801_010000000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.freerails.com/gallery/4474/4474_271801_010000000.jpg" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did some measuring tonight. 11.5 feet total length won't work for the room. Plus, it's really long. I believe I can do everything I want in 10 feet. So, I will construct the layout as a total 4ft x 10ft built in three section (2x8, 2x8, 2x4). The overall layout plan will stay the same.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This layout will be nowhere near the size of any layout built recently. My motto for this year is reduce. I'm tired of having a house full of crap. Time to purge and only keep the good stuff in life.<br />
<br />
With this plan, I had a few objectives.<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Build the layout so it can be moved easily.</li>
<li>Continuous running for when I simply want to come home after a hard day and run a train for a while.</li>
<li>Switching layout to tickle my fancy when I do want to get more involved with operations.</li>
<li>Interchanges. </li>
</ol>
<div>
I created this design basically utilizing four 2x4 foot sections for the main part of the layout and then two 4'x18" end cap sections for the half turns. There will be a 6" short scene divider between the two halves. I will use hex bolts to secure the sections together. I will be connecting the wiring using PowerPole Connections. Reference my <a href="https://rockislandpacific.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-rock-30-anderson-powerpole.html#comment-form">blog post </a>from the old layout for more details.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xg2zJvsxOAo/WlZq1EN6EnI/AAAAAAAANyE/n__s9nvv5PI2iJKLSS5QFRuGFtor7_nzQCLcBGAs/s1600/Layout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="253" data-original-width="358" height="226" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xg2zJvsxOAo/WlZq1EN6EnI/AAAAAAAANyE/n__s9nvv5PI2iJKLSS5QFRuGFtor7_nzQCLcBGAs/s320/Layout.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had been thinking a lot regarding the track design, but hadn't really put thought to paper yet. Today, I did that. I believe this will work. The only concern I have is there is a lot going on in the middle of the two horizontal halves. There would be a joint here. One solution is to construct two 2x8 sections and then have the end caps for the turns. I would suppose a 2x8 section would be easy enough to move. It's not like I'm having to move this every day. It will stay assembled for the most part and only be moved if we physically moved from our house or if I chose to setup in the garage vs. the bonus room. Anyone had experience with 2x8 foot sections? Thoughts?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is my basic track plan I sketched out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzhxKrekBgY/WlZtHmBJV5I/AAAAAAAANyQ/Ygi9pxEQSzw2EmHgx3x9GK29PCwn6vAWQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1604.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1218" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzhxKrekBgY/WlZtHmBJV5I/AAAAAAAANyQ/Ygi9pxEQSzw2EmHgx3x9GK29PCwn6vAWQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_1604.jpg" width="243" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The layout is a basic loop. I drew the flip side reversed vertically as I didn't want to be flipping the paper around when I was planning all this out. It would allow for continuous running, some switching opportunities, interchange, and highlight the few industries that I really want to model. This is so much smaller than what I have done in the past. It goes back to the days of a teenager in my parent's garage as far as size. I'm shooting for quality over quantity. Still model something nice, but manageable and something I can get some enjoyment out of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thoughts on the plan?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>

I decided to go with a Peabody Coal Dock. I never knew much about the Peabody Short Line, but have been reading what little I can find. It is surprising there are no books about it. <br />
<br />
Back around Christmas, I came across some Peabody 70-Ton Offset Hoppers by Bluford Shops (special run for Walthers) on eBay. I picked up a set and was very pleased with them upon arrival. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.walthers.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/800x267/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/0/1/01880000073683.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="267" data-original-width="800" height="106" src="https://www.walthers.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/800x267/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/0/1/01880000073683.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I managed to source two additional sets of these hoppers for a total of nine of them. Bluford then released the Peabody 2-Bay Hoppers. I was able to locate two complete sets of these for a total of 21 of the Peabody Coal Hoppers in either 2- or 3-bay style.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://cdn3.volusion.com/ztna9.tft5b/v/vspfiles/photos/BLU-60321-2.jpg?1492173094" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="297" data-original-width="716" height="132" src="https://cdn3.volusion.com/ztna9.tft5b/v/vspfiles/photos/BLU-60321-2.jpg?1492173094" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In an attempt to learn more about the Peabody Short Line, I found an article in Model Railroading Magazine - January 1989 issue about how someone modeled a river dock for unloading coal. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4L0AAOSwopRYcZJG/s-l1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4L0AAOSwopRYcZJG/s-l1600.jpg" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="604" height="320" width="241" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My wife's cousins work on the Mississippi River as Tug Boat Captains so I thought this would be neat to create in N scale. I could scratchbuild the conveyor structure to the barge. I could create a sign using Blair Lines DIY Custom Billboard Sign.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://cdn3.volusion.com/ztna9.tft5b/v/vspfiles/photos/BLN-2550-2.gif?1456472651" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="241" data-original-width="500" height="154" src="https://cdn3.volusion.com/ztna9.tft5b/v/vspfiles/photos/BLN-2550-2.gif?1456472651" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm also a fan of the Reddy Kilowatt character that was used on many coal hoppers. I had picked up a Miller Engineering animated sign a while back. I will incorporate this into the large river sign at the dock.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.microstru.com/images/Kilowatt-gif-1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.microstru.com/images/Kilowatt-gif-1.gif" data-original-height="494" data-original-width="500" height="316" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will send a unit train of Peabody Coal hoppers (powered by ICG or UP units) as well as a train of Chicago & Illinois Midland Coal hoppers (powered by C&IM units) to the dock. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Chicago & Illinois Midland moves most of its coal to the former Commonwealth Edison Coal Dock in Havana, Illinois. This one would be neat to model, but I would worry about the physics involved with the ramp on the far side of the unloading shed. So, I will stick to a simple bottom dump facility with conveyor out to the waiting barge for my river dock.</div>

Here are photos from the Model Railroading magazine article. The Peabody Coal Company built the river dock facility in 1957 in East St. Louis along the Mississippi River. It was located directly across from the Gateway Arch. The sign used to be lighted, but after years of deferred maintenance, the letters were just painted red. Coal was shipped from the River King mine in Freeburg, Illinois (southeast of St. Louis). Sometime in the 1960s, Peabody gave up the line from Freeburg to East St. Louis and began shipping on the Illinois Central. A new spur was run from the preparation plant at Freeburg to the Illinois Central DuQuoin to East St. Louis mainline which runs through the town of Freeburg. The dock was sold to the Illinois Central. "Illinois Central - Burlington" is written in large letters across the conveyor housing. Burlington Northern offloaded coal here. Years later, circa 1983, the dock was owned by Pillsbury. </div>

Here is one schematic I drew up late the other night. I have decided to go with Central Valley 150' Truss Bridge with Walkways #1820 for the mainline bridges. For the single track bridge, I plan on using the RS Laser Kits 60 Foot Span Girder Bridge #31064. I don't know anything about this kit but figured I would give it a try. I know many people have reported the quality of the Micro Engineering bridges can be less than desirable. So, I have been pondering a new layout for a while now. I have constructed and operated numerous layouts over the years, but really only two were successful layouts (modeling the Rock Island from Davenport, IA to Chicago and modeling the Rock Island between Ottawa and Utica). Both modeled in Nscale, the layouts worked well, but also had some issues that created some headaches.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "San Francisco", -apple-system, system-ui, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: -0.24px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
I still don't know what our destiny holds regarding moving, but figure there are some things I <span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: inherit;">can work on now for the next layout regardless.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline; font-family: "San Francisco", -apple-system, system-ui, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: -0.24px;">
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px;">
So, here are some of my wish list items as well as some items to avoid. Thoughts?</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Wish List:<br />Basic Mainline with Continuous Running.<br />Numerous interlockings with various connecting roads.<br />One small yard.<br />Numerous water crossings.<br />Basic operations with no more than two people or so.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Operate with various railroad power:<br />- Illinois Central Gulf<br />- Illinois Terminal<br />- Chicago & Illinois Midland<br />- Toledo, Peoria & Western<br />and lesser extent<br />- Chessie System<br />- Santa Fe<br />- Rock Island<br />- Maybe even a high-nose Southern unit for good measure.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Some Industrial Switching (fairly simply).<br />- Fuel Distributor<br />- LP Gas/Fertilizer Distributor<br />- Concrete Grain Elevator<br />- River Coal Dock<br />- Grocery Store Distributor<br />- A few general warehouses</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Things to Avoid:<br />Do not model prototypical operations of any one railroad. I have gone that route before. I find it extremely interesting, but I simply get overwhelmed as I want to model it fully and have a hard time reducing the operating scheme to the space I have available or fitting my budgeting funds. It ends up causing me too much stress. I just need to go "free willy" on this one. :-)</div>

Hold on to your hats. This is a big one! DCC. Say what?!?!?<br />Yeah, you read right. DCC has been a great source of pain for me over the past few years. New drop-in decoders not working in locomotives. Numerous locomotives going schizophrenic on me. I'm not alone in my issues either. Other layouts I have operated on have experienced similar issues (NCE or Digitrax). I know there are benefits for using DCC, but for my wish list, I just don't see it necessary anymore. I don't want to worry about it.</div>

I would like to install a simple two throttle system using a DC walk-around throttle from GML Enterprises. <a href="http://www.thegmlenterprises.com/id18.html">http://www.thegmlenterprises.com/id18.html</a></div>
